Shirk associating partners with Allah
(1) Associating partners with
Allah, “Shirk” great sin
Categories of Shirk
Quran on the topic
“Shirk is the only
sin that Allah does not forgive, 79 and
He forgives whomsoever He pleases, other sins than this, 80 for whosoever associates any other partner with Allah, does indeed
forge a big lie and commit the most heinous sin.” (4:48)
“Shirk 144 is the only sin that Allah does not forgive. He may forgive whoever
He will, other than this sin, for whoever associates partners with Allah does,
in fact, go far astray into deviation.”
(4:116)
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 32:
Narrated
'Abdullah:
When
the following Ayahs was revealed: "It
is those who believe and confuse not their belief with wrong
(worshipping others besides Allah.)" (6:83), the companions of Allah's
Apostle asked, "Who is amongst us who had not done injustice (wrong)?"
Allah revealed: "No doubt, joining
others in worship with Allah is a great injustice (wrong) indeed." (31.13)
[also see 3360, 3428 Volume 4]
“Tuhid” oneness of Allah is surety to Paradise
and “Shirk” associating partners with Allah is opening gate of Hell for
oneself.
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 44:
Narrated Anas:
The Prophet (s) said, "Whoever said La ilaha illallah (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah) and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of a barley grain, will be taken out of Hell. And whoever said: La ilaha illallah and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of a wheat grain will be taken out of Hell. And whoever said "La ilaha illallah" (none has the right to be worshipped but Allah) and has in his heart good (faith) equal to the weight of an atom (or a small ant) will be taken out of Hell."
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 3,
Number 128:
Narrated
Anas bin Malik:
"Once
Mu'adh was along with Allah's Apostle as a companion rider, Allah's Apostle (s)
said, "O Mu'adh bin Jabal." Mu'adh replied, "Labbaik and
Sa'daik. O Allah's Apostle!" Again the Prophet said, "O Mu'adh!"
Mu'adh said thrice, "Labbaik and Sa'daik, O Allah's Apostle!" Allah's
Apostle said, "There is none who testifies sincerely that none has the
right to be worshipped but Allah and Muhammad is his Apostle, except that Allah
will save him from the Hell-fire." Mu'adh said, "O Allah's Apostle!
Should I not inform the people about it so that they may have glad
tidings?" He replied, "When the people hear about it, they will
solely depend on it." Then Mu'adh narrated the above-mentioned Hadith just
before his death, being afraid of committing sin (by concealing the knowledge).
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 3,
Number 129:
Narrated
Anas:
I
was informed that the Prophet (s) had said to Mu'adh, "Whosoever will meet
Allah without associating anything in worship with Him will go to
Paradise." Mu'adh asked the Prophet, "Should I not inform the people
of this good news?" The Prophet replied, "No, I am afraid, lest they
should depend upon it (absolutely)."
Believing even in stars
etc. is “Shirk”, associating partners with Allah.
Bukhari Volume 2, Book 17, Number 1038:
Narrated Zaid bin Khalid
Al-Juhani:
Allah's Apostle (s) led the
Morning Prayer in Al-Hudaibiya and it had rained the previous night. When the
Prophet (s) had finished the prayer he faced the people and said, "Do you
know what your Lord has said?" They replied, "Allah and His Apostle
know better." (The Prophet said),
"Allah says, 'In this
morning some of My worshipers remained as true believers and some became
non-believers; he who said that it had rained with the blessing and mercy of
Allah is the one who believes in Me and does not believe in star, but he who
said it had rained because of such and such (star) is a disbeliever in Me and
is a believer in star.' "
(1) CHAPTER. What is said about
funerals, and those whose last words were: La ilãha ilallãh (none has
the right to be worshipped but Allah);
Avoiding “Shirk” in all its
forms and manifestations is expiation of even major sins.
Bukhari Volume 2, Book 23,
Number 1237:
Narrated
Abu Dhar:
Allah's
Apostle (s) said, "Someone came to me from my Lord and gave me the news
(or good tidings) that if any of my followers dies worshipping none (in any
way) along with Allah, he will enter Paradise." I asked, "Even if he
committed illegal sexual intercourse (adultery) and theft?" He replied,
"Even if he committed illegal sexual intercourse (adultery) and
theft."
Bukhari
Volume 8, Book 79, Number 6268:
Narrated Abu Dhar:
While I was walking with the
Prophet (s) at the Hurra of Medina in the evening, the mountain of Uhud
appeared before us. The Prophet said, "O Abu Dhar! I would not like to
have gold equal to Uhud (mountain) for me, unless nothing of it, not even a
single Dinar remains of it with me, for more than one day or three days, except
that single Dinar which I will keep for repaying debts. I will spend all of it
(the whole amount) among Allah's slaves like this and like this and like
this." The Prophet pointed out with his hand to illustrate it and then
said, "O Abu Dhar!" I replied, "Labbaik wa Sa'daik, O Allah's
Apostle!" He said, "Those who have much wealth (in this world) will
be the least rewarded (in the Hereafter) except those who do like this and like
this (i.e., spend their money in charity)." Then he ordered me,
"Remain at your place and do not leave it, O Abu Dhar, till I come back."
He went away till he disappeared from me. Then I heard a voice and feared that
something might have happened to Allah's Apostle, and I intended to go (to find
out) but I remembered the statement of Allah's Apostle that I should not leave,
my place, so I kept on waiting (and after a while the Prophet came), and I said
to him, "O Allah's Apostle, I heard a voice and I was afraid that
something might have happened to you, but then I remembered your statement and
stayed (there). The Prophet said, "That was Gabriel
who came to me and informed me that whoever among my followers died without
joining others in worship with Allah, would enter Paradise." I said,
"O Allah's Apostle, even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse
and theft?" He said, "Even if he had committed illegal sexual
intercourse and theft’
(3) CHAPTER. The Statement of
Allah; "...Then do not set up rivals unto Allah (in worship) while you
know (that He Alone has the right to be worshipped)..." (V.2:22)

worship with Allah" (6.83) was revealed, we said, "O Allah's Apostle!
Who is there amongst us who has not done wrong to himself?" He replied,
"It is not as you say, for 'wrong' in the Verse and 'do not confuse their
belief, with wrong means 'SHIRK' (i.e. joining others in worship with Allah).
Haven't you heard Luqman's saying to his son, 'O my son! Join not others in
worship with Allah; verily joining others in worship with Allah is a great (Zulm) wrong indeed." (31.13)
Asking favors from dead even
Prophet (s) is
“Shirk”; associating partners with God is an
unforgiveable sin.
(11) CHAPTER. The mention of Al-'Abbãs bin 'Abdul-Muttalib
Bukhari Volume 5, Book 62, Number 3710:
Narrated Anas:
Whenever there was drought,
'Umar bin Al-Khattab used to ask Allah for rain through Al'Abbas bin 'Abdul
Muttalib, saying, "O Allah! We used to request our Prophet to ask You for
rain, and You would give us. Now we request the uncle of our Prophet to ask You
for rain, so give us rain." And they would be given rain."
Translator’s Note; This Hadith indicates that you can only ask a living
person to invoke Allah for you and not the dead, even if the dead person may be
a Prophet.
Bukhari Volume 6, Book 65, Number
4477: [4761]
Narrated 'Abdullah:
I asked the Prophet (s), "What is the greatest sin in the
Sight of Allah?" He said, "That you set up a rival unto Allah though He Alone created you." I
said, "That is indeed a great sin." Then asked, "What is
next?" He said, "To kill your son lest he
should share your food with you." I asked, "What is
next?" He said, "To commit illegal sexual
intercourse with the wife of your neighbor."

Moses and his followers It was said to me, 'Look at the horizon.'' Behold!
There was a multitude of people filling the horizon. Then it was said to me,
'Look there and there about the stretching sky! Behold! There was a multitude
filling the horizon,' It was said to me, 'This is your nation out of whom
seventy thousand shall enter Paradise without reckoning.' "Then the
Prophet entered his house without telling his companions who they (the 70,000)
were. So the people started talking about the issue and said, "It is we
who have believed in Allah and followed His Apostle; therefore those people are
either ourselves or our children who are born in the Islamic era, for we were
born in the Pre-Islamic Period of Ignorance.'' When the Prophet (s) heard of
that, he came out and said. "Those are the people who do not treat
themselves with Ruqya, nor do they believe in bad or good omen (from birds
etc.) Or do they get themselves branded
(Cauterized) but they put their trust (only) in their Lord “On that 'Ukasha bin
Muhsin said.” Am I one of them, O Allah's Apostle?' The Prophet said,
"Yes." Then another person got up and said, "Am I one of
them?" The Prophet said, 'Ukasha has anticipated you."

besides Me, but you refused and insisted to worship others besides Me."'
Paradise is worshipping Allah and Hell for setting rivals to
Allah, “Shirk”.
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 83,

of the Ayah is not as you think, but it is as Luqman said to his son, 'O my
son! Join not in worship others with Allah, Verily! Joining others in worship
with Allah is a great wrong indeed.'" (31.13)

disbeliever in Me and is a believer in star.' "
(9) Tuhid inborn in human cognition NO “shirk”
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 81, Number
6557:
Narrated Anas bin Malik:
The Prophet said, "Allah will say to the person who
will have the minimum punishment in the Fire on the Day of Resurrection, 'If
you had things equal to whatever is on the earth, would you ransom yourself

1) Allah will say, 'I asked you a much easier
thing than this while you were in the backbone of Adam, (Note 2) that is, not to worship others besides
Me, but you refused and insisted to worship others besides Me."'
Note 1: An important Quranic Ayah explains the
vital value of practicing Tuhid at individual as well as the collective level:
039.029
MAUDUDI: Allah cites a parable: There is
a man who is shared by many harsh masters, each pulling him to themselves and
there is the other man who entirely belongs to one master. Can the two be alike
in comparison? 48 Praise be to Allah! 49 But most of the people
have no knowledge. 50
039.047
MAUDUDI “Even if the wicked people possessed all the wealth of
the earth, and as much more, they would be prepared to offer it all as ransom
to escape the terrible punishment of the Day of Resurrection; yet from Allah
there would appear before them that which they would never have imagined” (39:47)
Note: What is referred here is the Primordial Pledge each human
being took in the form of souls.
007.172
MAUDUDI: And, (O Prophet), 133 remind the people of the time, when your Lord brought
forth from the loins of the Children of Adam, their descendants and made them
bear witness about themselves. He asked them, "Am I not your Lord?" They replied, "Most certainly,
Thou alone art our Lord; we bear witness to this." 134 This We did lest you should say on the Day of
Resurrection, "We were unaware of this thing," (7:172)
007.172
MUHAMMAD ASAD: (172)
AND WHENEVER thy Sustainer brings forth their offspring from the loins of the
children of Adam, He [thus] calls upon them to bear witness about
themselves: "Am I not your Sustainer?" - To which they answer:
"Yea, indeed, we do bear witness thereto!" (Note 139) [Of this
We remind you,] lest you say on the Day of Resurrection, "Verily, we were
unaware of this";
Note 139: In the original, this passage is in the past tense ("He brought forth", "He asked them", etc.), thus stressing the continuous recurrence of the above metaphorical "question" and "answer": a continuity which is more clearly brought out in translation by the use of the present tense. According to the Qur'an, the ability to perceive the existence of the Supreme Power is inborn in human nature (fitrah); and it is this instinctive cognition - which may or may not be subsequently blurred by self-indulgence or adverse environmental influences - that makes every sane human being "bear witness about him" before God. As so often in the Qur'an, God's "speaking" and man's "answering" is a metonym for the creative act of God and of man's existential response to it.
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 81, Number 6528:
Narrated 'Abdullah:
While we were in the company of the Prophet (s) in a tent he
said, ''Would it please you to be one fourth of the people of Paradise?"
We said, "Yes." He said (s), "Would it please you to be
one-third of the people of Paradise?" We said, "Yes." He (s) said,
"Would it please you to be half of the people of Paradise?" We said,
"Yes." Thereupon he said (s), "I hope that you will be one half
of the people of Paradise, for none will enter Paradise but a Muslim soul, and
you people, in comparison to the people who associate others in worship with
Allah, are like a white hair on the skin of a black ox, or a black hair on the
skin of a red ox."

Committed illegal sexual intercourse."
Bukhari Volume 9, Book 88, Number 6938:
Narrated 'Itban bin Malik:
Once Allah's Apostle (s) came
to me in the morning, and a man among us said, "Where is Malik bin
Ad-Dukhshun?" Another man from us replied, "He is a hypocrite who
does not love Allah and His Apostle." The Prophet
(s) said, "Don't you think that he says: None has the right to be
worshipped but Allah, only for Allah's sake?" They replied,
"Yes" The Prophet (s) said, "Nobody
will meet Allah with that saying on the Day of Resurrection, but Allah will
save him from the Fire."
(13) CHAPTER. The rich (who do not
spend their wealth on good deeds) are in fact the poor (i.e., little rewarded).
And the Statement of Allah;
"Whosoever desires the life of the
world and its glitter; to them We shall pay in full (the wages of) their deeds
therein, and they will have no diminution therein. They are those for whom
there is nothing in the Hereafter but Fire; and vain are the deeds they did
therein. And of no effect is that which they used to do" (V.11:15-16)

Abu Dhar:
Once I went out at night and found Allah's Apostle (s) walking all alone accompanied by nobody, and I thought that perhaps he disliked that someone should accompany him. So I walked in the shade, away from the moonlight, but the Prophet looked behind and saw me and said, "Who is that?" I replied, "Abu Dhar, let Allah get me sacrificed for you!" He said, "O Abu Dhar, come here!" So I accompanied him for a while and then he said, "The rich are in fact the poor (little rewarded) on the Day of Resurrection except him whom Allah gives wealth which he gives (in charity) to his right, left, front and back, and does good deeds with it. I walked with him a little longer. Then he said to me, "Sit down here." So he made me sit in an open space surrounded by rocks, and said to me, "Sit here till I come back to you." He went towards Al-Harra till I could not see him, and he stayed away for a long period, and then I heard him saying, while he was coming, "Even if he had committed theft, and even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse?" When he came, I could not remain patient and asked him, "O Allah's Prophet! Let Allah get me sacrificed for you! Whom were you speaking to by the side of Al-Harra? I did not hear anybody responding to your talk." He said, "It was Gabriel who appeared to me beside Al-Harra and said, 'Give the good news to your followers that whoever dies without having worshipped anything besides Allah, will enter Paradise.' I said, 'O Gabriel! Even if he had committed theft or committed illegal sexual intercourse?' He said, 'Yes.' I said, 'Even if he has committed theft or committed illegal sexual intercourse?' He said, 'Yes.' I said, 'Even if he has committed theft or committed illegal sexual intercourse?' He said, 'Yes.' "
(In some copies of Sahih Al-Bukhari it
is also mentioned: "Even if he has drunk alcoholic liquors.")

Prophet (s) and between me and him and between me and him there was only the
back of the saddle, he said, "0 Mu'adh!" I replied, "Labbaik, 0
Allah's Apostle, and Sa'daik!" he said, "Do you know what Allah’s right upon
his slave is?" I said, "Allah and His Apostle know
best" He said "Allah's right upon his slaves is that they should worship Him alone and not worship anything else besides
Him." Then he proceeded for a while and then said, "O
Muadh bin Jabal!" I replied, "Labbaik, O Allah's Apostle: Sa'daik!'
He said, "Do you know what the right of the slaves upon Allah is if they do that?"
I replied, "Allah and His Apostle (s) know best." He said, "The right of the
slaves upon Allah is that He will not
punish them (if they do that)."

Abu Dharr:
I
came to the Prophet (s) while he was wearing white clothes and sleeping. Then I
went back to him again after he had got up from his sleep. He said,
"Nobody says: 'None has the right to be worshipped but Allah' and then
later on he dies while believing in that, except that he will enter Paradise.'
I said, "Even It he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and
theft." I said. "Even if he had committed illegal sexual intercourse
and theft? He said. 'Even If he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and
theft," I said, 'Even it he had committed illegal sexual intercourse and
thefts.' He said, "Even If he had committed Illegal sexual intercourse and
theft, in spite of the Abu Dharrs dislikeness. Abu 'Abdullah said, "This
is at the time of death or before it if one repents and regrets and says
"None has the right to be worshipped but Allah. He will be forgiven his
sins."
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 59, Number 3222:
Narrated Abu Dhar:
The Prophet (s) said,
"Gabriel said to me, 'Whoever amongst your followers die without having
worshipped others besides Allah, will enter Paradise (or will not enter the
(Hell) Fire)." The Prophet asked. "Even if he
has committed illegal sexual intercourse or theft?" He replied, "Even
then."
Bukhari Volume 3, Book 43,
Number 2388:
Narrated Abu Dhar:
Once, while I was in the company of the Prophet (s), he saw
the mountain of Uhud and said, "I would not like to have this mountain
turned into gold for me unless nothing of it, not even a single Dinar remains
of it with me for more than three days (i.e. I will spend all of it in Allah's
Cause), except that Dinar which I will keep for repaying debts." Then he
said, "Those who are rich in this world would have little reward in the
Hereafter except those who spend their money here and there (in Allah's Cause),
and they are few in number." Then he ordered me to stay at my place and
went not far away. I heard a voice and intended to go to him but I remembered
his order, "Stay at your place till I return." On his return I said,
"O Allah's Apostle! (What was) that noise which I heard?" He said,
"Did you hear anything?" I said, "Yes." He said,
"Gabriel came and said to me, 'Whoever amongst your followers dies,
worshipping none along with Allah, will enter Paradise.' " I said,
"Even if he did such-and-such things (i.e. even if he stole or committed
illegal sexual intercourse)" He said, "Yes."
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 56,
Number 2856:
Narrated Mu'adh:
I was a companion rider of the Prophet (s) on a donkey
called 'Ufair. The Prophet (s) asked, "O Mu'adh! Do you know what Allah's
right on His slaves is, and what the right of His slaves on Him is?" I
replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He said, "Allah's
right on His slaves is that they should worship Him (Alone) and should not
worship any besides Him. And slave's right on Allah is
that He should not punish him who worships none besides Him." I said,
"O Allah's Apostle! Should I not inform the people of this good
news?" He said, "Do not inform
them of it, lest they should depend on it (absolutely)."
NOTE: Here is
an appropriate caution for us all.
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 425:
Narrated 'Itban bin Malik:
Who
was one of the companions of Allah's Apostle (s) and one of the Ansar's who
took part in the battle of Badr: I came to Allah's Apostle and said, "O
Allah's Apostle I have weak eyesight and I lead my people in prayers. When it
rains the water flows in the valley between me and my people so I cannot go to
their mosque to lead them in prayer. O Allah's Apostle! I wish you would come
to my house and pray in it so that I could take that place as a Musalla. Allah's
Apostle said. "Allah willing, I will do so." Next day after the sun
rose high, Allah's Apostle and Abu Bakr came and Allah's Apostle asked for
permission to enter. I gave him permission and he did not sit on entering the
house but said to me, "Where do you like me to pray?" I pointed to a
place in my house. So Allah's Apostle (s) stood there and said, 'Allahu Akbar',
and we all got up and aligned behind him and offered a two-Rak'at prayer and
ended it with Taslim. We requested him to stay for a meal called
"Khazira" which we had prepared for him. Many members of our family
gathered in the house and one of them said, "Where is Malik bin
Al-Dukhaishin or Ibn Al-Dukhshun?" One of them replied, "He is a
hypocrite and does not love Allah and His Apostle." Hearing that, Allah's
Apostle said, "Do not say so. Haven't you seen that he said, 'None has the
right to be worshipped but Allah' for seeking Allah's Countenance (i.e. for
Allah's sake only.) He said, "Allah and His Apostle know better. We have
seen him helping and advising hypocrites."
Allah's Apostle
said, "Allah has forbidden the (Hell) fire for those who say, 'None has
the right to be worshipped but Allah' for Allah's sake only."

Bahira Saiba animals let loose in
name of Idols
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 61,
Number 3521:
Narrated
Said bin Al-Musaiyab:
Al-Bahira
was an animal whose milk was spared for the idols and other deities, and so
nobody was allowed to milk it. As-Saiba was an animal which they (i.e.
infidels) used to set free in the names of their gods so that it would not be
used for carrying anything. Abu Huraira said, "The Prophet (s) said, 'I
saw Amr bin 'Amir bin Luhai Al-Khuzai dragging his intestines in the (Hell)
Fire, for he was the first man who started the custom of releasing animals (for
the sake of false gods).' "
Note: worth noting the wrath of Allah for the one starting evil practice.
