Mercy of Allah Infinite
Bukhari Volume 2, Book 23,
Number 1284:
Narrated Usama bin Zaid:
The daughter of the Prophet (s) sent (a messenger) to the
Prophet requesting him to come as her child was dying (or was gasping), but the
Prophet returned the messenger and told him to convey his greeting to her and
say: "Whatever Allah takes is for Him and whatever He gives, is for Him,
and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world) and so she
should be patient and hope for Allah's reward." She again sent for him,
swearing that he should come. The Prophet got up, and so did Sad bin 'Ubada,
Muadh bin Jabal, Ubai bin Ka'b, Zaid bin Thabit and some other men. The child
was brought to Allah's Apostle while his breath was disturbed in his chest (the
sub-narrator thinks that Usama added) as if it was a leather water-skin. On
that the eyes of the Prophet (s) started shedding tears. Sad said, "O
Allah's Apostle! What is this?" He replied,
"It is mercy which Allah has lodged in the hearts of His slaves, and Allah is merciful only to those of His
slaves who are merciful (to others).
(2) Allah’s Mercy good deed recorded before doing & bad deed till committed
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 81,
Number 6491
Narrated Ibn 'Abbas:
The Prophet (s) narrating about his Lord said, "Allah
ordered (the appointed angels over you) that the good and the bad deeds be
written, and He then showed (the way) how (to write). If somebody intends to do
a good deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write for him a full good
deed (in his account with Him); and if he intends to do a good deed and
actually did it, then Allah will write for him (in his account) with Him (its
reward equal) from ten to seven hundred times to many more times: and if somebody
intended to do a bad deed and he does not do it, then Allah will write a full
good deed (in his account) with Him, and if he intended to do it (a bad deed)
and actually did it, then Allah will write one bad deed (in his account)
."
(3) Hope & Fear 2 wings of believer to
fly to safety
(19) CHAPTER. Hope (that Allah will forgive one's sins and will accept one's good deeds); with fear (of Allah);
And Sufyan said, "There is no Ayah in Qur’an harder on me than this one:
“Say: "O People of the Book! (lastum 'alaa shai'in hattaa tuqeemut Tawraata wal Injeel) ye have no ground to stand upon unless ye stand fast by the Law, the Gospel, and all the revelation that has come to you from your Lord." It is the revelation that cometh to thee from thy Lord, that increases in most of them their obstinate rebellion and blasphemy. But sorrow thou not over (these) people without Faith.” (5:68)
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 81,
Number 6469:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard Allah's Apostle (s) saying, Verily Allah created
Mercy. The day He created it, He made it into one hundred parts. He withheld
with Him ninety-nine parts, and sent its one part to all His creatures. Had the non-believer known of all the Mercy
which is in the Hands of Allah, he would not lose hope of entering Paradise,
and had the believer known of all the punishment which is present with Allah,
he would not consider himself safe from the Hell-Fire."
Note: it puts
shudders in body if we as a Muslim put our self in the place of the people of
scripture and Quran in place of Torah and Bible in view of our not following
Quran in letter and spirit. (Qul yaaa
Ahlal Kitaabi “Say O’ Muslims ” lastum 'alaa shai'in “You are nothing” hattaa tuqeemut “unless establish Quran” Tawraata wal Injeela)
“Astaghfirullah” Allah (SWT) bestows mercy on us and save us from doing the same to
Quran what people of past scripture did with their Books. Following Hadis
caries sufficient warning in this regard.
Bukhari Volume 6, Book 66,
Number 5058:
Narrated Abu Said Al-Khudri:
I heard Allah's Apostle (s) saying, "There
will appear some people among you whose prayer will make you look down upon
yours, and whose fasting will make you look down upon yours, but they will recite the Qur'an which will
not exceed their throats (they will not act on it) and they will go out of
Islam as an arrow goes out through the game whereupon the archer
would examine the arrowhead but see nothing, and look at the un-feathered arrow
but see nothing, and look at the arrow feathers but see nothing, and finally he
suspects to find something in the lower part of the arrow."
(4) Believer always cautious good deeds may not be annulled
(36) CHAPTER. (What is said regarding) the fear of a believer that his good deeds may be annulled (lost) without his knowledge.
And Ibrahim At-Taimi said, "When I compare my talks with my deeds (then I find that my deeds are deficient compared with my talks), I am afraid, my deeds deny what I talk." And Ibn Abi Mulaika said, "I met thirty Companions of the Prophet and each of them was afraid of becoming a hypocrite and none of them said that he was as strong in belief as the angel Jibril (Gabriel) or Mikael (Michael)." And Al-Hasan (Al-Basri) said, "It is only a faithful believer who dreads hypocrisy and only a hypocrite who considers himself safe (is not afraid of hypocrisy)
And one should be afraid, not to persist in hypocrisy and disobedience of Allah (by committing sins) without repenting to Allah immediately, as is referred to in the Statement of Allah;
"And
(they) do not persist in what (wrong) they have done, while they know."
(3:135).
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 48:
Narrated
'Abdullah (bin Mas'ud)
The Prophet (s) said, "Abusing a Muslim is Fusuq (an evil doing) and killing him is Kufr (disbelief)
Note 1: it is worthwhile to quote a well-known Hadis from Sahih Muslim to highlight this fear arising even in the heart of venerated Companions like Abu Bakar and Hanzalah and how Prophet (s) satisfied them.
Hanzalah Al-Usayyidi who was one of the scribes of Messenger
of Allah (s), reported: I met Abu Bakar he said: “How
are you O’ Hanzalah?” I said, “Hanzalah has become a hypocrite”. He
said, “Far removed is Allah from every imperfection, what are you saying?” I
said, “When we are in the company of Messenger of Allah (s) and he reminds us
of Hell-fire and Paradise, we feel as if we are seeing them with our very eyes,
and when we are away from Messenger of Allah (s), we
attend to our wives, our children, our business, most of these things
(pertaining to life hereafter) slip out of our minds.” Abu Bakr said, “By Allah, I also experience the same thing”.
So Abu Bakar and I went to Messenger of Allah (s) and I said to him, “O Messenger
of Allah (s), Hanzalah has turned hypocrite.” Thereupon Messenger of
Allah (s) said, “What has happened to you?” I said, “O Messenger of Allah, when
we are in your company, and are reminded of Hell-fire and Paradise, we feel as
if we are seeing them with our own eyes, but when we go away from you and
attend to our wives, children and business, much of these things go out of our
minds.” Thereupon Messenger of Allah (s) said, “By Him
in Whose Hand is my life if your state of mind remains the same as it is in my
presence and you are always busy in remembrance (of Allah), the angels will
shake hands with you in your beds and on the roads; but Hanzalah, time should
be devoted (to the worldly affairs) and time should be devoted (to prayer)”. He
(the Prophet (s) said this thrice. (Muslim)
Another translation of this hadith is similar but finishes
like this: But Hanzala! One hour for the Hereafter, and one hour for the things
of this world, and Prophet (s) repeated this three times.
Commentary: This Hadith also tells us about the
self-control, continence and piety of the Companions of the Prophet (s) with
reference to the natural instinct of man to think differently in different
situations. This condition has nothing to do with Nifaq (hypocrisy). Islam is
the Deen of Fitrah (pure nature) and takes the middle course in everything, and
combines the benefits of this world and those of the Hereafter. It also
satisfies the needs of the body as well as that of the soul.
Note 2: another Hadis
is also worth quoting here highlighting same topic:
“A man came to the Prophet, sallallahu
'alayhi wasallam, and said: “O Messenger of Allah, direct me to an act
which if I do it, [will cause] Allah to love me and people to love me.” He, sallallahu
'alayhi wasallam, answered: “Be indifferent (practice Zuhad) to the world
and Allah will love you; be indifferent (practice Zuhad) to what people possess
and they will love you.”
(Related
by Ibn Majah; and others, with good
chains of authorities.)
Note 3: Following
Quranic Ayahs will help the reader feeling confidence in his Lord Allah.
Quran on the topic
“(O Prophet,) say,
"O My servants, 70 who have wronged their
own souls: Do not despair of Allah's mercy: surely Allah forgives all sins: He
is the All-Forgiving, the All-Merciful. 71 Return to your Lord
and submit to Him before the scourge overtakes you, and then you may get no
help from anywhere. And follow the best aspect 72 of the Book sent down
by your Lord, before the scourge comes down upon you suddenly while you are
unaware.” (53:53-55)
(5) Mercy in the world - Only 1% of Mercy of Allah sent to earth.
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 78,
Number 6000:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard Allah's Apostle saying, Allah divided Mercy into
one-hundred parts and He kept its ninety-nine parts with Him and sent down its
one part on the earth, and because of that its one single part, His creations
are Merciful to each other, so that even the mare lifts up its hoofs away from
its baby animal, lest it should trample on it."
(6) Allah’s Mercy is beyond limits, infinite
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 78,
Number 6010:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle () stood up for the prayer and we too stood
up along with him. Then a Bedouin shouted while offering prayer. "O Allah!
Bestow Your Mercy on me and Muhammad only and do not bestow it on anybody else
along with us." When the Prophet had finished his prayer with Taslim, he
said to the Bedouin, "You have limited (narrowed) a very vast
(thing)," meaning Allah's Mercy.
(7) Mercy of Allah like Mother
having lost her child feeding any child she found
Bukhari
Volume
8, Book 78, Number 5999:
Narrated 'Umar bin Al-Khattab:
Some Sabi (i.e. war prisoners, children and woman only) were
brought before the Prophet and behold, a woman amongst them was milking her
breasts to feed and whenever she found a child amongst the captives, she took
it over her chest and nursed it (she had lost her child but later she found
him) the Prophet said to us, "Do you think that
this lady can throw her son in the fire?" We replied, "No, if she has
the power not to throw it (in the fire)." The Prophet then said,
"Allah is more merciful to His slaves than this lady to her son."
(8) Mercy of Allah – Will Speak to His creation on Day of Judgment.
Bukhari Volume 9, Book 97,
Number 7511:
Narrated 'Abdullah:
Allah's Apostle (s) said, "The person who will be the
last one to enter Paradise and the last to come out of Hell (Fire) will be a
man who will come out crawling, and his Lord will say to him, 'Enter Paradise.'
He will reply, 'O Lord, Paradise is full.' Allah will give him the same order
thrice, and each time the man will give Him the same reply, i.e., 'Paradise is
full.' Thereupon Allah will say (to him), 'Ten
times of the world is for you.' (Allah will speak
to His creation)
Bukhari Volume 9, Book 97,
Number 7512:
Narrated 'Adi bin Hatim:
Allah's Apostle (s) said, "There
will be none among you but his Lord will talk to him, and there will be
no interpreter between him and Allah. He will look to his right and see nothing
but his deeds which he has sent forward, and will look to his left and see
nothing but his deeds which he has sent forward, and will look in front of him
and see nothing but the (Hell) Fire facing him. So save yourself from the
(Hell) Fire even with half a date (given in charity)." Al-A'mash said:
'Amr bin Murra said, Khaithama narrated the same and added, 'even with a good
word.' "
(9) Mercy of Allah – Door of repentance
– Look for
(1)
CHAPTER. The Statement of Allah; Say: "0’ Ibadi (My slaves) who
have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)!
Despair not of the Mercy of Allah..." (39:53)
Bukhari Volume 6, Book 65,
Number 4810:
Narrated Ibn Abbas:
Some pagans, who committed murders in great number and
committed illegal sexual intercourse excessively, came to Muhammad and said,
"O Muhammad! Whatever you say and invite people to is good: but we wish if
you could inform us whether we can make expiration for our (past evil)
deeds."
So the Divine Ayah was revealed:
“Those who invoke not with Allah any other god,
not kill such life as Allah has forbidden except for just cause, nor commit
illegal sexual intercourse.” (25.68)
And there was also revealed:
“Say: O My slaves
who have transgressed against their souls! Despair not of the Mercy of Allah.”
(39.53)
Translator’s Note: The
latter are the characteristics of a person who is not interested in worldly
privileges, he does not seek fame or high social rank; his sole ambition is to
win Paradise and Allah's Pleasure.
(10) My Mercy overpowers My Wrath
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 59, Number 3194: [7404, 7553 Volume 9]
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's
Apostle (s) said, "When Allah completed the creation, He wrote in His Book
which is with Him on His Throne, "My Mercy overpowers My Anger."
Bukhari Volume 9, Book 97,
Number 7422:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (s) said,
"When Allah had finished (Act of creation) His creation, He wrote over his
Throne: "My Mercy overpowers My Anger." (See H. 3194)
(28) CHAPTER. (The Statement of
Allah; "And, verily, Our Word has
gone forth of old for Our slaves - the Messengers". (37:171)
Bukhari Volume 9, Book 97,
Number 7453:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle (s) said, "When Allah created the
creations, He wrote with Him on His Throne: 'My Mercy has preceded My
Anger."
(11) Allah will not be merciful to those who are not merciful to mankind
Bukhari Volume 9, Book 97, Number 7376: [7448,
7377]
Narrated
Jarir bin 'Abdullah:
Allah's
Apostle said, "Allah will not be merciful to those
who are not merciful to mankind."
Bukhari Volume 7, Book 75, Number 5655:
Narrated Abu 'Uthman:
Usama bin Zaid said that
while he, Sad and Ubai bin Ka'b were with the Prophet a daughter of the Prophet
sent a message to him, saying. 'My daughter is dying; please come to us."
The Prophet sent her his greetings and added "It is for Allah what He
takes, and what He gives; and everything before His sight has a limited period.
So she should hope for Allah's reward and remain patient." She again sent
a message, beseeching him by Allah, to come. So the Prophet got up. and so did
we (and went there). The child was placed on his lap while his breath was
irregular. Tears flowed from the eyes of the Prophet. Sad said to him,
"What is this, O Allah's Apostle?" He said. "This Is Mercy which
Allah has embedded in the hearts of whomever He wished of His slaves. And Allah does not bestow His Mercy, except on the merciful
among His slaves. (See Hadith No. 1284, Vol. 2)
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 83,
Number 6655:
Narrated Usama:
Once a daughter of Allah's Apostle sent a message to Allah's
Apostle while Usama, Sa'd, and my father or Ubai were (sitting there) with him.
She said, (in the message); My child is going to die; please come to us."
Allah's Apostle returned the messenger and told him to convey his greetings to
her, and say, "Whatever Allah takes, is for Him and whatever He gives is
for Him, and everything with Him has a limited fixed term (in this world): so
she should be patient and hope for Allah's reward." Then she again sent
for him swearing that he should come; so The Prophet got up, and so did we.
When he sat there (at the house of his daughter), the child was brought to him,
and he took him into his lap while the child's breath was disturbed in his
chest. The eyes of Allah's Apostle started shedding
tears. Sa'd said, "What is this, O Allah's Apostle?" The Prophet
said, "This is the mercy which Allah has lodged in the hearts of whoever
He wants of His slaves, and verily Allah is merciful only to those of His
slaves who are merciful (to others).'
(12) Mercy of Allah Paradise – not good deeds
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 81, Number 6463:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle said, "The
deeds “Amal” of anyone of you will
not save you (from the (Hell) Fire)." They said, "Even you (will not
be saved by your deeds), O Allah's Apostle?" He said, "No, even I
(will not be saved) unless and until Allah bestows His Mercy on me.
Therefore, do good deeds properly, sincerely and moderately, and worship Allah
in the forenoon and in the afternoon and during a part of the night, and always adopt a middle, moderate, regular course whereby you
will reach your target “Al-Qasad”
(Paradise)."
Translator’s
Note: The Prophet compares the Muslim to a traveller who should not exert
himself at the beginning of the journey for he would become too tired to reach
his destination. So one should adopt a moderate way of regular and constant
worshipping of Allah whereby one should reach his destination (i.e., Paradise).
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 81, Number 6467:
Narrated 'Aisha:
The Prophet said, "Do good deeds properly, sincerely
and moderately, and receive good news because one's good
deeds will not make him enter Paradise." They asked, "Even you, O
Allah's Apostle?" He said, "Even I, unless and until Allah bestows
His pardon and Mercy on me."
Bukhari Volume 7, Book 75, Number 5673:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
I heard Allah's Apostle (s) saying, "The good deeds of
any person will not make him enter Paradise." (i.e., none can enter
Paradise through his good deeds.) They (the Prophet's
companions) said, 'Not even you, O Allah's Apostle?' He said, "Not even
myself, unless Allah bestows His favor and mercy on me." So be
moderate in your religious deeds and do the deeds that are within your ability:
and none of you should wish for death, for if he is a good doer, he may
increase his good deeds, and if he is an evil doer, he may repent to
Allah."
Bukhari Volume 9, Book 91, Number 7003:
Narrated Kharija bin Zaid bin Thabit:
Um Al-'Ala an Ansari woman who had given a pledge of
allegiance to Allah's Apostle (s) told me:, "The Muhajirln (emigrants)
were distributed amongst us by drawing lots, and we got 'Uthman bin Maz'un in
our share. We made him stay with us in our house. Then he suffered from a
disease which proved fatal. When he died and was given a bath and was shrouded
in his clothes. Allah's Apostle came, I said, (addressing the dead body), 'O Aba
As-Sa'ib! May Allah be Merciful to you! I testify that Allah has honored you.'
Allah's Apostle said, 'How do you know that Allah has honored him?" I
replied, 'Let my father be sacrificed for you, O Allah's Apostle! On whom else
shall Allah bestow His honor?' Allah's Apostle said, 'As for him, by Allah,
death has come to him. By Allah, I wish him all good (from Allah). By Allah, in spite of the fact that I am Allah's Apostle, I
do not know what Allah will do to me." Um Al-'Ala added, "By
Allah, I will never attest the righteousness of anybody after that."
NOTE: Prophet (s) never claimed knowledge of unseen “Ghaib”
Say (O Muhammad, to the
disbelievers): I say not unto you (that) I possess the treasures of Allah, nor
that I have knowledge of the Unseen (Ghaib);
and I say not unto you: Lo! I am an angel. I follow only that which is inspired
in me. Say: Are the blind man and the seer equal? Will ye not then take
thought? (6:50)
Note; dark blue are notes while black is copied from
translations of Ahadis and red is Quranic Ayahs and also to highlight certain parts in
translation of “Sahih Bukhari” by Dr.
Muhammad Mohsin Khan.
Understanding Quran
Research for establishing correlations between Ahadis which are supporting and explaining each other is a great need of the day and truly scholastic endeavors can bring the requisite clarity to the message of Islam, which is getting tainted by pseudo scholars giving a false image of Islam, especially when addressing prophetic literature, “Ahadis” which is to explain and substantiate the message contained in Quran, not to create dark corridors full of doubts creating an ever growing predicament in this regard; this is the raison d’ etre of Ayah 7 of Surah Ale Imran.
Bukhari Volume 6, Book 65, Book of Tafseer, Number 4547:
Narrated 'Aisha:
Allah's Apostle recited the Verse:--
“He it is Who has sent down to thee the Book: In it are
verses basic or fundamental “Muhkimat” (of established meaning); they are the foundation of
the Book “Ummul Kitab”: others are allegorical “Mutshabihat”. But those in whose
hearts is perversity follow the part thereof that is allegorical, seeking
discord “Fitna”, and searching for its hidden meanings, but no
one knows its hidden meanings except Allah. And those who are firmly grounded
in knowledge say: "We believe in the Book; the whole of it is from our
Lord:" and none will grasp the Message except men of understanding.” (3:7)
Then Allah's Apostle said, "If you see those who follow
thereof that is allegorical (not entirely clear), then they are those whom
Allah has named [those in whose hearts is perversity as seeking discord [“Fitna”] 'So beware of them."
This Hadis could be better understood when
read in light of Ahadis laying down that knowledge dealing with scientific
phenomenon, so often invited by The Creator to ponder and reflect upon; will
increase in coming generations, given below in full for the benefit of the
reader. Ayah 7 of Surah Ale Imran mentioned in above Hadis lays down the
difference between clear ordains “Muhkimat” verses the allegorical “Mutshabihat”. Example of
clearly laid down ordains are mostly of statutory nature such as matters regarding
marriage and divorce, inheritance and many more Ayahs dealing with duties such
as Ibadah, worship; Salah, Fasting, Zakah and Hajj.
Allegorical Ayahs can be divided further into two types such as permanent, like
Allah Himself, Paradise, Hell, angels and many Ayahs dealing with eschatology.
Second type are those Ayahs which point and hint towards realities which are
left for the believers to ponder but never
try to explain as long as these become manifest thus getting from domain of
“Mutshabihat”
Ayahs of allegorical nature to “Muhkimat” clear Ayahs; caution dully given in this Hadis and Ayah. Some
examples of this second type are biological realities about stages of
development of child in womb of mother and other scientific realities; example
taken here is 36th Ayah of Surah 36. It is also worth noting here
that this Ayah mentions that every created thing is in pairs while this surah and
Ayah itself is a pair, i.e. Surah 36 Ayah 36.
“Glory to Allah, Who created in pairs of all
things that the earth produces, as well as their own (human) kind and (other)
things of which they have no knowledge.”
(36:36)
Such Ayahs were allegorical as long as mankind
not grew in knowledge such as electron and proton; however this allegorical
Ayah has become a great reality with advancement in science. There are many
more such Ayahs of Quran especially about embryology understood with passage of
time, not quoted here for sake of brevity as this is not the topic under
discussion, aim is to only make it clear that Ayahs of allegorical nature must
not be pursued unless solid knowledge could support and till such time must be
taken as laid in Quran without unnecessary rhetoric as clearly warned in
following Ayah by The Creator.
“Lo! Those who wrangle concerning the revelations
of Allah without a warrant having come unto them, there is naught else in their
breasts save pride which they will never attain. So take thou refuge in Allah.
Lo! He, only He, is the Hearer, the Seer.” (40:56)
Another reason for exercising great caution
regarding allegorical Ayahs is to guard against going astray resulting in
schism, damaging the raison d’ etre of Islam. Interpreting and trying to
rationalize an allegorical Ayah about some realty not yet made manifest by The
Creator, not only leads one astray but lays foundation of different school of
thoughts and off shoots in religion, causing disputation, debate and
disagreement endangering the very purpose of religion. Example of such mistake
is making pharaoh a “friend of God” by great mystic philosopher Ibn Arabi,
about 7 centuries ago while trying to explain Ayah 92 of Surah 10, given below.
“But this day We save thee in thy body that thou
mayst be a portent for those after thee. Lo! most of mankind are heedless of
Our portents (Ayahs).” (10:92)
Body of Remises II found out in last century
was alluded here by The Creator but an endeavors to explain a great realty
before it had to be made manifest in the grand design of The Creator made the
scholar go wrong while interpreting “saving body” being a favor to pharaoh.
(Page No. 116. 2nd paragraph.
http://www.sufi.ir/books/download/english/ibn-arabi-en/fusus-al-hikam-en.pdf
This example makes the point clear about
allegorical Ayahs as to why The Creator warned of its dangerous consequences if
interpreted without a solid foundation using mere conjecture.
However a subtle point must not be
misunderstood here that Quran is not putting a barrier to inquiry and research
in learning process, which being a different topic is greatly emphasized in
Quran, Prophet (s) specially ordered to pray.
“O my Lord! Increase me in knowledge.” (20:114)
This great emphasis on learning is the reason
behind emergence of eminent scholars, scientists and philosophers, few to
mention, like Ghazzali, Ibne Rushd better known as Averroes and Ibn Sina as Avicenna
in western world, having imbibed greatly from such scholars of Islam.
Ahadis
clearly emphasize that coming generation will have vast comprehending faculties
in certain fields of knowledge.

CHAPTER. The Statement of the Prophet; It is probable that a
person who receives a piece of information indirectly "may
comprehend it better than he who has heard it directly from its source"
Narrated 'Abdur Rahmãn bin Bakrah's father, once the Prophet was riding his camel and a man was holding its rein. The Prophet (s) asked, "What is the day today?" We kept quiet, thinking that he might give that day another .name. He said, "Isn't it the day of Nahar (slaughtering of the animals of sacrifice) We replied.”Yes." He further asked, "Which month is this?" We again kept quiet, thinking that he might give it another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied, "Yes." He said, "Verily! Your blood, property and honor are sacred to one another (i.e. Muslims) like the sanctity of this day of yours, in this month of yours and in this city of yours. It is incumbent upon those who are present to inform those who are absent because those who are absent might comprehend (what I have said) better than the present audience."
Bukhari Volume 2, Book 25, Number 1741:
Narrated Abu Bakra:
The Prophet delivered to us a sermon on the Day of Nahr. He
said, "Do you know what is the day today?" We said, "Allah and
His Apostle know better." He remained silent till we thought that he might
give that day another name. He said, "Isn't it the Day of Nahr?" We
said, "It is." He further asked, "Which month is this?" We
said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." He remained silent till we
thought that he might give it another name. He then said, "Isn't it the
month of Dhul-Hijja?" We replied: "Yes! It is." He further
asked, "What town is this?" We replied, "Allah and His Apostle
know it better." He remained silent till we thought that he might give it
another name. He then said, "Isn't it the forbidden (Sacred) town (of
Mecca)?" We said, "Yes. It is." He said, "No doubt, your
blood and your properties are sacred to one another like the sanctity of this
day of yours, in this month of yours, in this town of yours, till the day you
meet your Lord. No doubt! Haven't I conveyed Allah's message to you? They said,
"Yes." He said, "O Allah! Be witness. So it is incumbent upon those who are present
to convey it (this information) to those who are absent because the informed
one might comprehend it (what I have said) better than the present audience,
who will convey it to him. Beware! Do not renegade (as) disbelievers
after me by striking the necks (cutting the throats) of one another."
Bukhari Volume 5, Book 64, Number 4406:
Narrated Abu Bakra:
The Prophet said, "Time has taken its original shape
which it had when Allah created the Heavens and the Earth. The year is of
twelve months, four of which are sacred, and out of these (four) three are in
succession, i.e. Dhul-Qa'da, Dhul-Hijja and Al-Muharram, and the fourth is
Rajab which is named after the Mudar tribe, between (the month of) Jumaida
(ath-thania) and Sha'ban." Then the Prophet asked, "Which is this
month?" We said, "Allah and His Apostle know better." On that
the Prophet kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with
another name. Then the Prophet said, "Isn't it the month of
Dhul-Hijja?" We replied, "Yes." Then he said, "Which town
is this?" "We replied, "Allah and His Apostle know better."
On that he kept quiet so long that we thought that he might name it with
another name. Then he said, "Isn't it the town of Mecca?" We replied,

said, "So your blood, your properties, (The sub-narrator Muhammad said, 'I
think the Prophet also said: And your honor are sacred to one another like the
sanctity of this day of yours, in this city of yours, in this month of yours;
and surely, you will meet your Lord, and He will ask you about your deeds.
Beware! Do not become infidels after me, cutting the throats of one another. It
is incumbent on those who are present to convey this message (of mine) to those
who are absent. May
be that some of those to whom it will be conveyed will understand it better
than those who have actually heard it." (The sub-narrator,
Muhammad, on remembering that narration, used to say, "Muhammad spoke the
truth!") He (i.e. Prophet) then added twice, "No doubt! Haven't I
conveyed (Allah's Message) to you?"
