BATTLES - INFIGHTING

Outside Influence in Sowing Discord FITNA

Note: Reader is advised to go through and get familiar with Prophet’s predictions about affliction FITNA, before reading about Battles between Muslims.

Companion’s Comprehension & Aversion to FITNA Affliction after Prophet (s)

(30) CHAPTER. Allah's Statement; "And fight them until there is no more Fitna (disbelief and worshipping of others along with Allah) and (all and every kind of) worship is for Allah (Alone). But if they cease, let there be no transgression except against Az-Zalimun (the polytheists and wrong-doers)." (V.2:193)

Bukhari Volume 6, Book 65, Number 4513 to 4515:

Narrated Nafi':

During the affliction of Ibn Az-Zubair, two men came to Ibn 'Umar and said, "The people are lost, and you are the son of 'Umar, and the companion of the Prophet, so what forbids you from coming out?" He said, "What forbids me is that Allah has prohibited the shedding of my brother's blood." They both said, "Didn't Allah say, 'and fight then until there is no more affliction?" (2:193) He said "We fought until there were no more afflictions and the worship is for Allah (Alone) while you want to fight until there is affliction and until the worship become for other than Allah."

Narrated Nafi (through another group of sub-narrators): A man came (An outsider else name should have been there) to Ibn 'Umar and said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman! What made you perform Hajj in one year and Umra in another year and leave the Jihad for Allah' Cause though you know how much Allah recommends it?" Ibn 'Umar replied, "O son of my brother! Islam is founded on five principles, i.e. believe in Allah and His Apostle, the five compulsory prayers, the fasting of the month of Ramadan, the payment of Zakat, and the Hajj to the House (of Allah)." The man said, "O Abu Abdur Rahman! Won't you listen to why Allah has mentioned in His Book: 'If two groups of believers fight each other, then make peace between them, but if one of then transgresses beyond bounds against the other, then you all fight against the one that transgresses. (49.9) and:--"And fight them till there is no more afflictions (i.e. no more worshiping of others along with Allah)." Ibn 'Umar said, "We did it, during the lifetime of Allah's Apostle (s) when Islam had only a few followers. A man would be put to trial because of his religion; he would either be killed or tortured. But when the Muslims increased, there was no more affliction or oppressions." The man said, "What is your opinion about 'Uthman and 'Ali?" Ibn 'Umar said, "As for 'Uthman, it seems that Allah has forgiven him, but you people dislike that he should be forgiven. And as for 'Ali, he is the cousin of Allah's Apostle (s) and his son-in-law." Then he pointed with his hand and said, "That is his house which you see." [Also see 4650]

Bukhari Volume 6, Book 65, Number 4650:

Narrated Ibn 'Umar:

That a man came to him (while two groups of Muslims were fighting) and said; "Abu 'Abdur-Rahman! Don't you hear what Allah has mentioned in His Book: 'and if two parties (or groups) among the believers fall to fighting...' (V.49:9)

So what prevents you from fighting as Allah has mentioned in His Book? “Ibn 'Umar said, "0’ son of my brother! I would rather be blamed for not fighting because of this Ayah than to be blamed because of another Ayah where Allah says: 'And whoever kills a believer intentionally...'  "(4:93)

Then that man said, "Allah says: 'and fight them until there is no more Fitna (disbelief and polytheism, i.e. worshipping other besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will be all for Allah

(Alone)... "'(8:39)

Ibn 'Umar said, "We did this during the lifetime of Allah's Messenger when the number of Muslims was small, and a man was put to trial because of his religion; Al-Mushrikun (pagans etc.) would either kill or chain him; but when the Muslims increased (and Islam spread), there was no persecution." When that man saw that Ibn 'Umar did not agree to his proposal, he said, "What is your opinion regarding 'Ali and 'Uthman?" Ibn 'Umar said, "What is my opinion regarding 'Ali and 'Uthman? As for 'Uthman, Allah forgave him and you disliked to forgive him, and 'Ali is the cousin and son-in-law of Allah's Messenger," Then he pointed out with his hand and said, "Andthat is his daughter's (house) which you can see

Bukhari Volume 6, Book 65, Number 4651:

Narrated Said bin Jubair:

Ibn 'Umar came to us and a man said (to him), "What do you think about 'Qit-alal-Fitnah' (fighting caused by afflictions)." Ibn 'Umar said (to him), "And do you understand what an affliction is? Muhammad (s) used to fight against the pagans, and his fighting with them was against affliction, (and his fighting was) not like you are fighting which is carried on for the sake of ruling."

Bukhari Volume 6, Book 65, Number 4652:

Narrated Ibn Abbas:

When the Verse: -- "If there are twenty steadfast amongst you, they will overcome two hundred." (8.65) was revealed, then it became obligatory for the Muslims that one (Muslim) should not flee from ten (non-Muslims). Sufyan (the sub-narrator) once said, "Twenty (Muslims) should not flee before two hundred (non-Muslims)." Then there was revealed: 'But now Allah has lightened your (task)....’ (8.66)

So it became obligatory that one-hundred (Muslims) should not flee before two hundred (non-Muslims). (Once Sufyan said extra, "The Verse: 'Urge the believers to the fight. If there are twenty steadfast amongst you (Muslims)  ...' was revealed.) Sufyan said, "Ibn Shabrama said, "I see that this order is applicable to the obligation of enjoining good and forbidding evil."

Bukhari Volume 9, Book 92, Number 7095:

Narrated Sa'id bin Jubair:

'Abdullah bin 'Umar came to us and we hoped that he would narrate to us a good Hadith. But before we asked him, a man got up and said to him, "O Abu 'Abdur-Rahman! Narrate to us about the battles during the time of the afflictions, as Allah says:

'And fight them until there are no more afflictions (i.e. no more worshipping of others besides Allah).'" (2.193)

Ibn 'Umar said (to the man), "Do you know what is meant by afflictions? Let your mother bereave you! Muhammad (s) used to fight against the pagans; for a Muslim was put to trial in his religion (The pagans will either kill him or chain him as a captive). His fighting was not like you are fighting which is carried on for the sake of ruling."

Companion’s opinions about Infighting after Prophet (s)

(5) CHAPTER. "And fight them until there is no more Fitna (disbelief and polytheism, i.e. worshipping others besides Allah) and the religion (worship) will be all for Allah (Alone) (in the whole of the world)..." (8:39)

Maududi: O Believers, fight with the disbelievers till there is no more mischief and the way of life prescribed by Allah is established in its entirety.31 Then if they desist from mischief, surely Allah beholds what they do, but if they give no heed, know it that Allah is your Protector, and He is the best of all protectors and helpers.

Muhammad Asad: And fight against them until there is no more oppression and all worship is devoted to God alone.(Note 39) And if they desist-behold, God sees all that they do; (Note 40) (8:39-40)

Note 39: I.e., until man is free to worship God. Cf. the identical phrase in 2:193, and the corresponding note. Both these passages stress self-defense - in the widest sense of this word - as the only justification of war.

Note 40: I.e., He knows their motives, and will requite them according to their merits.

Bukhari Volume 6, Book 65, Number 4650: [4513 to 4515]

Infighting after Prophet (s) was for worldly gains

Companion’s Opinion  each intended to kill the other

Bukhari Volume 9, Book 92, Number 7112:

Narrated Abu Al-Minhal:

When Ibn Ziyad and Marwan were in Sham and Ibn Az-Zubair took over the authority in Mecca and Qurra' (the Kharijites) revolted in Basra, I went out with my father to Abu Barza Al-Aslami till we entered upon him in his house while he was sitting in the shade of a room built of cane. We sat with him and my father started talking to him saying; "O Abu Barza! Don't you see in what dilemma the people have fallen?" The first thing heard him saying "I seek reward from Allah for myself because of being angry and scornful at the Quraish tribe. O you Arabs! You know very well that you were in misery and were few in number and misguided, and that Allah has brought you out of all that with Islam and with Muhammad till He brought you to this state (of prosperity and happiness) which you see now; and it is this worldly wealth and pleasures which has caused mischief to appear among you. The one who is in Sham (i.e. Marwan), by Allah, is not fighting except for the sake of worldly gain: and those who are among you, by Allah, are not fighting except for the sake of worldly gain; and that one who is in Mecca (i.e., Ibn Az-Zubair) by Allah, is not fighting except for the sake of worldly gain."

Bukhari Volume 9, Book 92, Number 7113:

Narrated Abi Waih:

Hudhaifa bin Al-Yaman said, 'The hypocrites of today are worse than those of the lifetime of the Prophet, because in those days they used to do evil deeds secretly but today they do such deeds openly.'

Bukhari Volume 9, Book 92, Number 7114:

Narrated Abi Asha'sha:

Hudhaifa said, 'In fact, it was hypocrisy that existed in the lifetime of the Prophet but today it is Kufr (disbelief) after belief.'

Murderer and Murdered both will go to Hell

Muslims faced with swords killer & killed both Hell

Bukhari Volume 9, Book 87, Number 6875: [7083 Volume 9]

Bukhari Narrated Al-Ahnaf bin Qais:

I went to help that man (i.e., 'Ali), and on the way I met Abu Bakra who asked me, "Where are you going?" I replied, "I am going to help that man." He said, "Go back, for I heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'If two Muslims meet each other with their swords then (both) the killer and the killed one are in the (Hell) Fire.' I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! It is alright for the killer, but what about the killed one?' He said, 'The killed one was eager to kill his opponent."

Bukhari Volume 1, Book 2, Number 31

Narrated Al-Ahnaf bin Qais:

While I was going to help this man ('Ali Ibn Abi Talib), Abu Bakra met me and asked, "Where are you going?" I replied, "I am going to help that person." He said, "Go back for I have heard Allah's Apostle saying, 'When two Muslims fight (meet) each other with their swords, both the murderer as well as the murdered will go to the Hell-fire.' I said, 'O Allah's Apostle! It is all right for the murderer but what about the murdered one?' Allah's Apostle replied, "He surely had the intention to kill his companion."
