The companions of the Prophet asked, "What have you interpreted (about
this dream)?”O Allah's Apostle!" he
replied, "(It is religious) knowledge."

Narrated Hamza's father:
Allah's Messenger (s) said, "While I was sleeping, I saw myself drinking (milk), and I was so contented that I noticed its (the milk) wetness coming out of my nails. Then I gave (the milk) to 'Umar." They (i.e., the Companions of the Prophet) asked, "What have you interpreted (about the dream)?" He said, "It is (religious) knowledge”.

so long that he was dragging it." They asked, "How have you
interpreted it, O Allah's Apostle?" He
said, "Religion."
(2) Umar’s 3
wishes granted by Allah
revealed in Quran
through Divine Inspiration
him was affliction
his caliphate called good but Bida’a
seen in dream
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number 402:
Narrated 'Umar (bin Al-Khattab):
My Lord agreed with me in three things:
1. I said, "O Allah's Apostle (s), I wish we took the
station of Abraham as our praying place (for some of our prayers). So came the
Divine Inspiration: And take you (people) the station of Abraham as a place of
prayer (for some of your prayers e.g. two Rakat of Tawaf of Ka'ba)".
(2.125)
2. And as regards the (verse of) the veiling of the women, I
said, 'O Allah's Apostle! I wish you ordered your wives to cover themselves
from the men because good and bad ones talk to them.' So the verse of the
veiling of the women was revealed. (24:31 & 33:59)
3. Once the wives of the Prophet (s) made a united front
against the Prophet (s) and I said to them, 'It may be if he (the Prophet)
divorced you, (all) that his Lord (Allah) will give him instead of you wives
better than you.' So this verse (the same as I had said) was revealed."
(66.5).
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 79,
Number 6240:
Narrated 'Aisha:
(The wife of the Prophet) 'Umar bin Al-Khattab used to say
to Allah's Apostle "Let your wives be veiled" But he did not do so.
The wives of the Prophet (s) used
to go out to answer the call of nature at night only at Al-Manasi.' Once Sauda,
the daughter of Zama went out and she was a tall woman. 'Umar bin Al-Khattab
saw her while he was in a gathering, and said, "I have recognized you, O
Sauda!" He ('Umar) said so as he was anxious for some Divine orders
regarding the veil (the veiling of women.) So Allah revealed the Verse of
veiling. (Al-Hijab; complete body cover excluding the eyes). (See Hadith No.
146, Vol. 1)
Bukhari
Volume 6, Book 65, Number 4483:
Narrated Anas:
Umar said, "I agreed with Allah in three things,"
or said, "My Lord agreed with me in three things. I said, 'O Allah's
Apostle! Would that you took the station of Abraham as a place of prayer.' I
also said, 'O Allah's Apostle! Good and bad persons visit you! Would that you
ordered the Mothers of the believers to cover themselves with veils.' So the
Divine Verses of Al-Hijab (i.e. veiling of the women) were revealed. I came to
know that the Prophet (s) had blamed some of his wives so I entered upon them
and said, 'You should either stop (troubling the Prophet) or else Allah will
give His Apostle better wives than you.' When I came to one of his wives, she
said to me, 'O 'Umar! Does Allah's Apostle (s) have not what he could advise
his wives with that you try to advise them?' “Thereupon Allah revealed:--
"It may be, if he divorced you (all) his Lord will give
him instead of you, wives better than you Muslims (who submit to Allah).."
(66.5)
Note: When Abdullah Bin Ubai died Umar was
critical about merciful behavior on the part of the Prophet (s) wanting to
offer funeral prayers even for chief of hypocrite, latter Allah forbade this
practice. (Bukhari
Volume 2, Book 23, Number 1269) "And never (O Muhammad)
pray (funeral prayer) for any of them (i.e. hypocrites) that dies." (9.

(3) Umar Muhadassoon a person
reaching
truth through Divine Inspiration
Note: Read in
conjunction with Ahadis noted above for better understanding
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 60, Number 3469:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
The Prophet (s) said, "Amongst the people preceding you
there used to be 'Muhaddathun' (i.e. persons
who can guess things that come true later on, as if those persons have been
inspired by a divine power), and if there are any such persons amongst my
followers, it is 'Umar bin Al-Khattab."
Bukhari
Volume 5, Book 62, Number 3689:
Narrated
Abu Hurairah:
Allah's
Messenger said "Among the nations (who lived) before you there were Muhaddathun people who were inspired, though they
were not Prophets). And if there is any of such a person amongst my followers,
it is 'Umar." Narrated Abu Hurairah The Prophet (s) said, "Among the
nation (who lived) before you from Bani Israel, there were men who used to be
inspired with guidance, though they were not prophets, and if there is any of
such persons amongst my followers, it is 'Umar."
(4) Umar last door to Peaceful
era after
him was affliction
Bukhari
Volume 1, Book 9, Number 525:
Narrated Shaqiq:
That he had heard Hudhaifa saying, "Once I was sitting
with 'Umar and he said, 'Who amongst you remembers the statement of Allah's
Apostle (s) about the afflictions?' I said, 'I know it as the Prophet (s) had
said it.' 'Umar said, 'No doubt you are bold.' I said, 'The afflictions caused
for a man by his wife, money, children and neighbor are expiated by his
prayers, fasting, charity and by enjoining (what is good) and forbidding (what
is evil).' 'Umar said, 'I did not mean that but I asked about that affliction
which will spread like the waves of the sea.' I (Hudhaifa) said, 'O leader of
the faithful believers! You need not be afraid of it as there is a closed door
between you and it.' 'Umar asked, Will the door be
broken or opened?' I replied, 'It will be broken.' 'Umar said, 'then it
will never be closed again.' I was asked whether 'Umar knew that door. I
replied that he knew it as one knows that there will be night before the
tomorrow morning. I narrated a Hadith that was free from any misstatement"
The sub-narrator added that they deputed Masruq to ask Hudhaifa (about the
door). Hudhaifa said, "The door was 'Umar himself."
Note: breaking of door means martyrdom of Umar.
Bukhari Volume 2, Book 24,
Number 1435:
Narrated Abu Wail:
Hudhaifa said; "'Umar said, 'who amongst you remembers
the statement of Allah's Apostle (s) about afflictions'?' I said, 'I know it as
the Prophet (s) had
said it.' 'Umar said, 'No doubt, you are bold. How did he say it?' I said, 'A
man's afflictions (wrong deeds) concerning his wife, children and neighbors are
expiated by (his) prayers, charity, and enjoining good.' (The sub-narrator
Sulaiman added that he said, 'The prayer, charity, enjoining good and
forbidding evil.') 'Umar said, 'I did not mean that, but I ask about that
affliction which will spread like the waves of the sea.' I said, 'O chief of
the believers! You need not be afraid of it as there is a closed door between
you and it.' He asked, 'Will the door be broken or opened?' I replied, 'No, it will
be broken.' He said, 'Then, if it is broken, it will never be closed again?' I
replied, 'Yes.' “Then we were afraid to ask what that door was, so we asked
Masruq to inquire, and he asked Hudhaifa regarding it. Hudhaifa said, "The
door was 'Umar. "We further asked Hudhaifa whether 'Umar knew what that
door meant. Hudhaifa replied in the affirmative and added, "He knew it as
one knows that there will be a night before the tomorrow morning."
Bukhari Volume 3, Book 30,
Number 1895:
Narrated Abu Wail from Hudhaifa:
Umar asked the people, "Who remembers the narration of
the Prophet (s) about
the affliction?" Hudhaifa said, "I heard the Prophet saying, 'The
affliction of a person in his property, family and neighbors is expiated by his
prayers, fasting, and giving in charity." 'Umar said, "I do not ask
about that, but I ask about those afflictions which will spread like the waves
of the sea." Hudhaifa replied, "There is a closed gate in front of
those afflictions." 'Umar asked, "Will that gate be opened or broken?"
He replied, "It will be broken." 'Umar said, "Then the gate will
not be closed again till the Day of Resurrection." We said to Masruq,
"Would you ask Hudhaifa whether 'Umar knew what that gate
symbolized?" He asked him and he replied "He ('Umar) knew it as one
knows that there will be night before tomorrow, morning.
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 61,
Number 3586:
Narrated Hudhaifa:
Once 'Umar bin Al-Khattab said, said, "Who amongst you
remembers the statement of Allah's Apostle (s) regarding the afflictions?" Hudhaifa replied, "I
remember what he said exactly." 'Umar said. "Tell (us), you are
really a daring man!'' Hudhaifa said, "Allah's Apostle (s) said, 'A man's afflictions
(i.e. wrong deeds) concerning his relation to his family, his property and his
neighbors are expiated by his prayers, giving in charity and enjoining what is
good and forbidding what is evil.' “‘Umar said, "I don't mean these
afflictions but the afflictions that will be heaving up and down like waves of
the sea." Hudhaifa replied, "O chief of the believers! You need not
fear those (afflictions) as there is a closed door between you and them."
'Umar asked, "Will that door be opened or broken?" Hudhaifa replied,
"No, it will be broken." 'Umar said, "Then it is very likely
that the door will not be closed again." Later on the people asked
Hudhaifa, "Did 'Umar know what that door meant?" He said. "Yes,
'Umar knew it as everyone knows that there will be night before the tomorrow
morning. I narrated to 'Umar an authentic narration not lies." We dared
not ask Hudhaifa; therefore we requested Masruq who asked him, "What does
the door stand for?" He said, "Umar."
(5) Tarawih formally started
by Umar during
his
caliphate called good but Bid'a
Bukhari Volume 3, Book 32, Number 2009:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
Allah's Apostle (s) said, "Whoever prayed at
night the whole month of Ramadan out of sincere Faith and hoping for a reward
from Allah, then all his previous sins will be forgiven." Ibn Shihab (a
sub-narrator) said, "Allah's Apostle (s) died and the people continued
observing that (i.e. Nawafil offered individually, not in congregation), and it
remained as it was during the Caliphate of Abu Bakr and in the early days of
'Umar's Caliphate."
Bukhari
Volume
3, Book 32, Number 2010:
Narrated Ibn Shihab:
'Abdur Rahman bin 'Abdul Qari said, "I went
out in the company of 'Umar bin Al-Khattab one night in Ramadan to the mosque
and found the people praying in different groups, a man praying alone or a man
praying with a little group behind him. So, 'Umar said, 'in my opinion I would
better collect these (people) under the leadership of one Qari (Reciter) (i.e.,
let them pray in congregation!)'. So, he made up his mind to congregate them
behind Ubai bin Ka'b. Then on another night I went again in his company and the
people were praying behind their reciter. On that, 'Umar remarked, 'what an excellent Bid'a (i.e. innovation
in religion) this is; but the prayer which they do not perform, but sleep at
its time is better than the one they are offering.' He meant the
prayer in the last part of the night. (In those days) people used to pray in
the early part of the night."
(80)
CHAPTER. If there is a wall or a Sutra between the Imam and
followers;
Al-Hasan said, "There is no harm in offering Salat (prayer) if there is a river between you and the imam." Abu Mijlaz said, "One can follow the Imam even if there is a road or a wall between the Imam and followers provided the Takbir (Allahu Akbar) is audible."
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 10, Number 729:
Narrated 'Aisha:
Allah's Apostle (s) used to pray in his room at
night. As the wall of the room was LOW, the people saw him and some of them
stood up to follow him in the prayer. In the morning they spread the news. The
following night the Prophet (s) stood for the prayer and the people followed
him. This went on for two or three nights. Thereupon Allah's Apostle (s) did
not stand for the prayer the following night, and did not come out. In the
morning, the people asked him about it. He replied that he was afraid that the
night prayer might become compulsory.
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 10,
Number 731:
Narrated Zaid bin Thabit:
Allah's Apostle (s) made a small room in the month of Ramadan (Sa'id said,
"I think that Zaid bin Thabit said that it was made of a mat") and he
prayed there for a few nights, and so some of his companions prayed behind him.
When he came to know about it, he kept on sitting. In the morning, he went out
to them and said, "I have seen and understood what you did. You should
pray in your houses, for the best prayer of a person is that which he prays in
his house except the compulsory prayers."
Bukhari Volume 2, Book 19,
Number 1129:
Narrated 'Aisha, the mother of the faithful believers:
One night Allah's Apostle (s) offered the prayer in the Mosque and the people followed him.
The next night he also offered the prayer and too many people gathered. On the
third and the fourth nights more people gathered, but Allah's Apostle (s)
did not come out to
them. In the morning he said, "I saw what you were doing and nothing but
the fear that it (i.e. the prayer) might be enjoined on you, stopped me from
coming to you." And that happened in the month of Ramadan.
Little different version of Hadis 1129:
Narrated Aisha:
Once in the middle of the night Allah's Apostle (s) went out
and prayed in the mosque and some men prayed with him. The next morning the
people spoke about it and so more people gathered and prayed with him (in the
second night). They circulated the news in the morning, and so, on the third
night the number of people increased greatly. Allah's Apostle (s) came out and
they prayed behind him. On the fourth night the mosque was overwhelmed by the
people till it could not accommodate them. Allah's Apostle (s) came out only for the Fajar
prayer and when he finished the prayer, he faced the people and recited
"Tashah-hud" (I testify that none has the right to be worshipped but
Allah and that Muhammad is His Apostle), and then said, "Amma ba'dau.
Verily your presence (in the mosque at night) was not hidden from me, but I was
afraid that this prayer (Prayer of Tahajjud) might be made compulsory and you
might not be able to carry it out."
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 78,
Number 6113:
Narrated Zaid bin Thabit:
Allah's Apostle (s) made a small room (with a palm leaf mat). Allah's Apostle (s)
came out (of his house)
and prayed in it. Some men came and joined him in his prayer. Then again the
next night they came for the prayer, but Allah's Apostle (s) delayed and did not come out
to them. So they raised their voices and knocked the door with small stones (to
draw his attention). He came out to them in a state of anger, saying, "You
are still insisting (on your deed, i.e. Tarawih prayer in the mosque) that I
thought that this prayer (Tarawih) might become obligatory on you. So you people,
offer this prayer at your homes, for the best prayer of a person is the one
which he offers at home, except the compulsory (congregational) prayer."
(6) Umar about prayers in Churches
(54) CHAPTER. To offer As-Salat (the prayer) in a church or in a temple etc.
'Umar said, "We do not enter your churches because of the statues and pictures." Ibn 'Abbas used to offer Salat (prayers) in the church provided there were no statues in it.
Narrated
'Aishah:
Umm Salama told Allah's Messenger (s) it about a church which she had seen in Ethiopia and which was called Mariya. She told him about the pictures which she had seen in it. Allah's Messenger (s) said, "If any righteous pious man dies amongst them, they would build a place of worship at his grave and make these pictures in it; they are the worst creatures with Allah."
(7) Umar having a religious trend
before Islam
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 83, Number 6697:
Narrated Ibn 'Umar:
'Umar said "O Allah's
Apostle (s)! I vowed to perform Itikaf for one night in Al-Masjid-al-Haram,
during the Pre-Islamic Period of ignorance (before embracing Islam). "The
Prophet (s) said, "Fulfill your vow
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 57, Number 3144: [4320 Volume 5]
Narrated Nafi:
'Umar bin Al-Khattab said, "O Allah's
Apostle (s)! I vowed to observe Itikaf for one day during the Pre-Islamic
period." The Prophet (s) ordered him to fulfill his vow. 'Umar gained two
lady captives from the war prisoners of Hunain and he left them in some of the
houses at Mecca. When Allah's Apostle (s) freed the captives of Hunain without
ransom, they came out walking in the streets. 'Umar said (to his son), "O
Abdullah! See what the matter is." 'Abdullah replied, "Allah's
Apostle (s) has freed the captives without ransom." He said (to him),
"Go and set free those two slave girls." (Nafi added) Allah's Apostle
(s) did not perform the 'Umra from Al-Jarana, and if he had performed the
'Umra, it would not have been hidden from 'Abdullah.
(8) Umar’s home in
Paradise Prophet (s)
saw in dream
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 59, Number 3242:
Narrated Abu Huraira:
While we were in the company of the Prophet (s), he said, "while I was asleep, I saw myself in Paradise and there I beheld a woman making ablution beside a palace, I asked, to whom this palace belongs? ’They said, To 'Umar bin Al-Khattab.' Then I remembered 'Umar's Ghaira (concerning women), and so I quickly went away from that palace." (When 'Umar heard this from the Prophet), he wept and said, "Do you think it is likely that I feel Ghaira because of you, O Allah's Apostle?"
(9) Satan leaves Umar’s path & runs away
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 59, Number 3294: [6085 Volume 8]
Narrated Sad bin Abi Waqqas:
Once Umar asked the leave to see Allah's Apostle in whose company there were some Quraishi women [Ummul-Momineen, wives of the Prophet (s)] who were talking to him and asking him for more financial support raising their voices. When 'Umar asked permission to enter the women got up (quickly) hurrying to screen them. When Allah's Apostle (s) admitted 'Umar, Allah's Apostle (s) was smiling, 'Umar asked, "O Allah's Apostle! May Allah keep you happy always?" Allah's Apostle (s) said, "I am astonished at these women who were with me. As soon as they heard your voice, they hastened to screen themselves." 'Umar said, "O Allah's Apostle! You have more right to be feared by them." Then he addressed (those women) saying, "O enemies of your own souls! Do you fear me and not Allah's Apostle?" They replied. "Yes, for you are fearful and fierce man as compared with Allah's Apostle." On that Allah's Apostle (s) said (to 'Umar), "By Him in Whose Hands my life is, whenever Satan sees you taking a path, he follows a path other than yours."
