ALI IN MADINA
(1) Ali distributed gift of silk amongst
family women seeing sign of anger
on face of the Prophet (s)
Bukhari Volume 3, Book 47, Number 2614: [5366 Volume 7]
Narrated 'Ali:
The Prophet (s) gave me a silken
dress as a gift and I wore it. When I saw the signs of anger on his face, I cut
it into pieces and distributed it among women."
Note 1: from Urdu translation: Narration from Abu Sualeh has
following words, “…distributed amongst Fatimas', meaning Fatima Az-Zahara, his
wife, Fatima binte Asad, his mother, Fatima binte Hamza bin Abdul Muttalib, and
Fatima binte Shayba, wife of Aqeel bin Abu Talib, his brother.”
Note 2: This Hadis amply elaborates the point that wearing silk
by men was disliked by Prophet (s) whereas women were allowed.
(2) Ali special honor given flag
on Day of Khyber
Bukhari
Volume 4, Book 56, Number 2942:
Narrated Sahl bin Sad:
That he heard the Prophet (s) on the
day (of the battle) of Khaibar saying, "I will give the flag to a person
at whose hands Allah will grant victory." So, the companions of the
Prophet (s) got up, wishing eagerly to see to whom the flag will be given, and
every one of them wished to be given the flag. But the Prophet (s) asked for
'Ali. Someone informed him that he was suffering from eye-trouble. So, he
ordered them to bring 'Ali in front of him. Then the Prophet (s) spat in his
eyes and his eyes were cured immediately as if he had never any eye-trouble.
'Ali said, "We will fight with them (i.e. infidels) till they become like
us (i.e. Muslims)." The Prophet (s) said, "Be patient, till you face them and invite them to
Islam and inform them of what Allah has enjoined upon them. By Allah! If a
single person embraces Islam at your hands (i.e. through you), that will be
better for you than the red camels."
Bukhari
Volume 4, Book 56, Number 2975:
Narrated Salama bin Al-Akwa:
Ali remained behind the Prophet (s)
during
the battle of Khaibar as he way suffering from some eye trouble but then he
said, "How should I stay behind Allah's Apostle?" So, he set out till
he joined the Prophet (s).
On the eve of the day of the conquest of Khaibar, Allah's Apostle (s)
said,
"(No doubt) I will give the flag or, tomorrow, a man whom Allah and His
Apostle (s) love or who loves Allah and His
apostle will take the flag. Allah will bestow victory upon him." Suddenly
'Ali joined us though we were not expecting him. The people said, "Here is
'Ali. "So, Allah's Apostle (s) gave the flag to him and Allah
bestowed victory upon him.
(3) Ali marriage with Fatima
Bukhari
Volume 3, Book 34, Number 2089:
Narrated 'Ali:
I got an old she-camel as my share
from the booty, and the Prophet (s) had given me another from Al-Khumus. And
when I intended to marry Fatima [daughter of the Prophet(s)], I arranged that a
goldsmith from the tribe of Bani Qainuqa' would accompany me in order to bring
Idhkhir and then sell it to the goldsmiths and use its price for my marriage
banquet.
Bukhari
Volume 3, Book 42, Number 2375:
Narrated Husain bin Ali:
Ali bin Abi Talib said: "I got
a she-camel as my share of the war booty on the day (of the battle) of Badr,
and Allah's Apostle (s) gave me another she-camel. I let both of them kneel at
the door of one of the Ansar, intending to carry Idhkhir on them to sell it and
use its price for my wedding banquet on marrying Fatima. A goldsmith from Bam
Quinqa' was with me. Hamza bin 'Abdul-Muttalib was in that house drinking wine
and a lady singer was reciting: "O Hamza! (Kill) the (two) fat old she
camels (and serve them to your guests)."
So Hamza took his sword and went
towards the two she-camels and cut off their humps and opened their flanks and
took a part of their livers." (I said to Ibn Shihab, "Did he take
part of the humps?" He replied, "He cut off their humps and carried
them away.") 'Ali further said, "When I saw that dreadful sight, I
went to the Prophet (s) and told him the news. The Prophet (s) came out in the
company of Zaid bin Haritha who was with him then, and I too went with them. He
went to Hamza and spoke harshly to him. Hamza looked up and said, 'Aren't you
only the slaves of my forefathers?' The Prophet (s) retreated and went out.
This incident happened before the prohibition of drinking." (3091, 4003)
(4) Ali named Abu Turab by Prophet (s)
out of love sleeping in mosque
annoyed with Fatima
Bukhari
Volume 1, Book 8, Number 441: [6280 Volume 8]
Narrated Sahl bin Sa'd:
Allah's Apostle (s) went to Fatima's
house but did not find 'Ali there. So he asked, "Where is your
cousin?" She replied, "There was something between us and he got
angry with me and went out. He did not sleep (mid-day nap) in the house."
Allah's Apostle (s) asked a person to look for him. That person came and said,
"O Allah's Apostle! He (Ali) is sleeping in the mosque." Allah's
Apostle (s) went there and 'Ali was lying. His upper body cover had fallen down
to one side of his body and he was covered with dust. Allah's Apostle (s)
started cleaning the dust from him saying: "Get up! O Aba Turab. Get up! O
Aba Turab (literally means: O father of dust).
Bukhari
Volume 5, Book 62, Number 3703:
Narrated Abu Hazim:
A man came to Sahl bin Sad and said,
"This is so-and-so," meaning the Governor of Medina, "He is
calling 'Ali bad names near the pulpit." Sahl asked, "What is he
saying?" He (i.e. the man) replied, "He calls him (i.e. 'Ali) Abu
Turab." Sahl laughed and said, "By Allah, none but the Prophet (s)
called
him by this name and no name was dearer to 'Ali than this." So I asked
Sahl to tell me more, saying, "O Abu 'Abbas! How (was this name given to
'Ali)?" Sahl said; 'Ali went to Fatima and then came out and slept in the
Mosque. The Prophet (s) asked Fatima, "Where is your
cousin?" She said, "In the Mosque." The Prophet (s)
went
to him and found that his (i.e. Ali's) covering sheet had slipped of his back
and dust had soiled his back. The Prophet (s) started wiping the dust off his back
and said twice, "Get up! O Abu Turab (i.e. O. man with the dust)."
Bukhari
Volume 8, Book 78, Number 6204:
Narrated Sahl bin Sad:
The most beloved names to 'Ali was
Abu Turab, and he used to be pleased when we called him by it, for none named
him Abu Turab (for the first time), but the Prophet (s). Once 'Ali got angry with (his
wife) Fatima, and went out (of his house) and slept near a wall in the mosque.
The Prophet (s) came searching for him, and someone
said, "He is there, lying near the wall." The Prophet (s)
came
to him while his ('Ali's) back was covered with dust. The Prophet (s)
started
removing the dust from his back, saying, "Get up, O Abu Turab!"
(5) Ali not appointed successor
Bukhari
Volume 4, Book 51, Number 2741:
Narrated Al-Aswad:
In the presence of 'Aisha some
people mentioned that the Prophet (s) had appointed 'Ali by will as his
successor. 'Aisha said, "When did he (s) appoint him by will? Verily when
he died he was resting against my chest (or said: in my lap) and he asked for a
wash-basin and then collapsed while in that state, and I could not even
perceive that he (s) had died, so when did he appoint him by will?"
(6) Ali refused to ask caliphate question
during Prophet (s) fatal illness
Bukhari
Volume 5, Book 64, Number 4447:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin Abbas:
Ali bin Abu Talib came out of the
house of Allah's Apostle (s) during his fatal illness. The people asked,
"O Abu Hasan (i.e. Ali)! How is the health of Allah's Apostle (s) this
morning?" 'Ali replied, "He has recovered with the Grace of
Allah." 'Abbas bin 'Abdul Muttalib held him by the hand and said to him,
"In three days you, by Allah, will be ruled (by somebody else), and by
Allah, I feel that Allah's Apostle (s) will die from this ailment of his, for I
know how the faces of the offspring of 'Abdul Muttalib look at the time of
their death. So let us go to Allah's Apostle (s) and ask him who will take over
as Ameer
(the Caliphate). If it is given to us we will know as to it, and if it is given
to somebody else, we will inform him so that he may tell the new Ameer
(ruler) to take care of us." 'Ali said, "By Allah, if we asked
Allah's Apostle (s) for it (i.e. the Caliphate) and he denied it us, the people
will never give it to us after that. And by Allah, I will not ask Allah's
Apostle for it."
Bukhari
Volume 8, Book 79, Number 6266:
Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Abbas:
'Ali bin Abu Talib came out of the
house of the Prophet (s) during
his fatal ailment. The people asked ('Ali), "O Abu Hasan! How is the
health of Allah's Apostle (s) this
morning?" 'Ali said, "This morning he is better, with the grace of
Allah." Al-'Abbas held Ali by the hand and said, "Don't you see him
(about to die)? By Allah, within three days you will be the slave of the stick
(i.e., under the command of another ruler). By Allah, I think that Allah's
Apostle (s) will die from his
present ailment, for I know the signs of death on the faces of the offspring of
'Abdul Muttalib. So let us go to Allah's Apostle (s)
to
ask him who will take over the Caliphate. If the authority is given to us, we
will know it, and if it is given to somebody else we will request him to
recommend us to him. “Ali said, "By Allah! If we ask Allah's Apostle (s) for the ruler ship and he refuses,
then the people will never give it to us. Besides, I will never ask Allah's
Apostle (s) for it."
(7) Ali sent to read out parts of
Surah Tauba
warning Quraish about punishment
from Allah if do not accept Islam
Bukhari Volume 1, Book 8, Number
369:
Narrated Abu Hurairah;
On the Day of Nahr (10th of Dhul-Hajj, in the year prior to the last Hajj of the Prophet (s) when Abu Bakr was the leader of the pilgrims in that Hajj), Abu Bakr sent me along with other announcers to Mind to make a public announcement (proclaiming): "No Mushrik (polytheist, pagan, idolater and disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad is allowed to perform Hajj after this year; and no naked person is allowed to perform the Tawaf around the Ka'bah."
Then Allah's Messenger sent 'All to read
out the Surah Bara’a (At-Tauba) to the people; so he made the
announcement along with us on the day of Na hr in Mina: "No Mushrik
- (polytheist, pagan, idolater and
disbeliever in the Oneness of Allah and in His Messenger Muhammad (s) is
allowed to perform Hajj after this year and no naked person is allowed
to perform the Tawaf around the Ka'bah."
“This is a declaration 1 of immunity (from obligations) by Allah and His Messenger to those mushriks with whom you had made treaties: 2 "You are free to move about in the land for four months more: 3 but you should know that you cannot frustrate the Will of Allah, and that Allah will degrade the rejecters of the Truth." This is a public proclamation from Allah and His Messenger for all the people on the Day of Great Haj: 4 Allah is free from the treaty obligations made with the Mushrik and so is His Messenger. If, therefore, you repent now, it is better for you but if you turn away, you should know it well that you cannot frustrate (the Will of) Allah. And, O Prophet, give the good news of a painful chastisement to the rejecters excepting those Mushrik with whom you made treaties. And who afterwards did not violate these in the least nor did they give help to anyone against you; so you also should observe the treaties with such people in accordance with their terms, for Allah loves the pious people. 5 Then, when the months made unlawful 6 for fighting expire, kill the Mushrik wherever you find them, and seize them, and besiege them, and lie in wait for them at every place of ambush. But if they repent, and establish Salat and pay the Zakat dues, then let them go their way: 7 for Allah is Forgiving and Compassionate. And if any of the Mushrik requests you for protection so that he may come to you (to hear the Word of Allah), give him protection till he hears the Word of Allah; then convey him to the place of his safety: this should be done because these people do not know the Truth. 8” (9:1-6)
(8) Ali stating what all written material
was with him
Bukhari Volume 4, Book 58, Number

We did not, write anything
from the Prophet (s) except the Quran and what is written in this paper,
(wherein) the Prophet (s) said, "Medina is a sanctuary from (the mountain
of) AEIR to so and-so, therefore, whoever innovates (in it) an heresy or
commits a sin, or gives shelter to such an innovator, will incur the Curse of
Allah. The angels and all the people; and
none of his compulsory or optional good deeds of worship will be accepted and
the asylum granted by any Muslim is to be secured by all the Muslims even if it
is granted by one of the lowest social status among them. And whoever betrays a
Muslim in this respect will incur the Curse of Allah, the angels and all the
people, and his compulsory and optional good deeds of worship will not be
accepted. And any freed slave will take as masters (befriends) people other
than his own real masters who freed him without taking the permission of the
latter, will incur the Curse of Allah, the angels and all the people, and his
compulsory and optional good deeds of worship will not be accepted."

I asked 'Ali "Do you have
anything Divine literature besides what is in the Qur'an?" Or, as Uyaina

Who made the grain split (germinate) and created the soul, we have nothing
except what is in the Quran and the ability (gift) of understanding Allah's
Book which He may endow a man, with and what is written in this sheet of
paper." I asked, "What is on this paper?" He replied, "The legal regulations of Diya (Blood-money) and the (ransom

killed in Qisas (equality in punishment) for killing a Kafir (disbeliever)."
Bukhari Volume 8, Book 85, Number 6755:

have no Book to recite except the Book of Allah (Qur'an) and this paper. Then
'Ali took out the paper, and behold! There was written in it, legal verdicts
about the retaliation for wounds, the ages of the camels (to be paid as Zakat
or as blood money). In it was also written: 'Medina is a sanctuary from Air
(mountain) to Thaur (mountain). So whoever innovates in it a heresy (something
new in religion) or commits a crime in it or gives shelter to such an
innovator, will incur the curse of Allah, the angels and all the people, and
none of his compulsory or optional good deeds will be accepted on the Day of
Resurrection. And whoever (a freed slave) takes as his master (i.e. be-friends)
some people other than his real masters without the permission of his real
masters, will incur the curse of Allah, the angels and all the people, and none
of his compulsory, or optional good deeds will be accepted on the Day of
Resurrection. And the asylum granted by any Muslim is to be secured by all the
Muslims, even if it is granted by one of the lowest social status among them;
and whoever betrays a Muslim, in this respect will incur the curse of Allah,
the angels, and all the people, and none of his Compulsory or optional good
deeds will be accepted on the Day of Resurrection."

place, and whoever innovates in it an heresy or commits a sin, or gives shelter
to such an innovator in it will incur the curse of Allah, the angels, and all
the people, none of his compulsory or optional good deeds of worship will be accepted.
And the asylum (of protection) granted by any Muslim is to be secured
(respected) by all the other Muslims; and whoever betrays a Muslim in this
respect incurs the curse of Allah, the angels, and all the people, and none of
his compulsory or optional good deeds of worship will be accepted, and whoever
(freed slave) befriends (take as masters) other than his manumitters without
their permission incurs the curse of Allah, the angels, and all
Bukhari

have the knowledge of any Divine Inspiration besides what is in Allah's
Book?" 'Ali replied, "No, by Him Who splits the grain of corn and
creates the soul. I don't think we have such knowledge, but we have the ability
of understanding which Allah may endow a person with, so that he may understand
the Qur'an, and we have what is written in this paper as well." I asked,
"What is written in this paper?" He replied, "(The regulations
of) blood-money, the freeing of captives, and the judgment that no Muslim
should be killed for killing an infidel."

Narrated
Ibn Al-Hanafiya:
If Ali had spoken anything bad
about 'Uthman then he would have mentioned the day when some persons came to
him and complained about the Zakat officials of 'Uthman. 'Ali then said to me, "Go to
'Uthman and say to him, 'this document contains the regulations of spending the Sadqa of Allah's Apostle (s) so order your Zakat officials to act
accordingly." I took the document to 'Uthman. 'Uthman said, "Take it
away, for we are not in need of it." I returned to 'Ali with it and
informed him of that. He said, "Put it whence you took it."
Narrated
Muhammad bin Suqa: I heard Mundhir At-Tuzi reporting Ibn Hanafiya who said, "My father sent

Abu Abdur-Rahman who was
one of the supporters of Uthman said to Abu Talha who was one of the supporters

blood. I heard him saying: Once the Prophet (s) sent me and
Az-Zubair saying, 'Proceed to such-and-such Ar-Roudah (place) where you will
find a lady whom Hatib has given a letter. So when we arrived at Ar-Roudah, we
requested the lady to hand over the letter to us. She said, 'Hatib has not
given me any letter.' We said to her. 'Take out the letter or else we will
strip off your clothes.' So she took it out of her braid. So the Prophet (s)
sent for Hatib, (who came) and said, 'Don't hurry in judging me, for, by Allah,
I have not become a disbeliever, and my love to Islam is increasing. (The
reason for writing this letter was) that there is none of your companions but
has relatives in Mecca who look after their families and property, while I have
nobody there, so I wanted to do them some favor (so that they might look after
my family and property).' The Prophet (s) believed him. 'Umar said, 'Allow me
to chop off his (i.e. Hatib's) neck as he has done hypocrisy.' The Prophet (s) said, (to
'Umar), 'Who knows, perhaps Allah has looked at the warriors of Badar and said
(to them); 'Do whatever you like, for I have forgiven you.' "Abdur-Rahman
added, "So this is what encouraged him (i.e. Ali)."

Apostle', for if you were an apostle we would not fight with you." Allah's
Apostle asked Ali to rub it out, but Ali said, "I will not be the person
to rub it out." Allah's Apostle (s) rubbed it out and made peace
